About the work
Five-juan yǔlù of Shèngkě Déyù 德玉 聖可德玉 (1628-08-12 – 1701/02, shìshòu 73), LínjìYángqí dharma-heir of Pòshān Hǎimíng 海明 (1597–1666) at Huáyánsì 華嚴寺 in Sìchuān (whence his abbacy-form Huáyán Shèngkě / Huáyán lǎorén). Compiled by fǎsì Guāngfó 光佛 děng biān. Printed as Jiāxīng Canon J35 B342.
Abstract
Authorship. Per the 德玉 note: native of Yíngshān 營山 (Sìchuān; same prefecture as 慧機 Tiěbì Huìjī). Born 1628; tonsured under Pòshān during the 1640s–50s; transmission within the Pòshān-line. Sole long-tenure abbacy at Huáyánsì in Sìchuān, where he served until his 1701 death.
Dating. notBefore = c. 1660 (post-transmission preaching). notAfter = 1701 (death). The five-juan extent covers the long 1660s–1700 preaching career.
Other works. Apart from this yǔlù, Déyù was a noted shùnzhū commentary author: KR6q0156 《禪林寶訓順硃》 (commentary on Chánlín bǎoxùn) and KR6q0227 《道德經順硃》 (commentary on Lǎozǐ). Also wrote the front-preface to his dharma-nephew 徹御’s yǔlù KR6q0487.
Lineage and significance. Listed in the 海明 Pòshān-line note as one of the principal heirs (the “Huáyán line”), parallel to Zhàngxuě Tōngzuì 通醉 (Zhāojué line) and Liányuè 道正 (Yùquán line). His exceptional longevity (73 years, dying 1701) and combined Chán-and-classical-text-commentary output make him distinctive among the Pòshān heirs.

Other points of interest
- Multi-text-commentary Chán master. Déyù’s combination of yǔlù preaching and classical-text commentary across both Buddhist (Chánlín bǎoxùn) and Daoist (Lǎozǐ) traditions makes him an unusual hybrid figure within the Pòshān-line — paralleling the 淨挺 Liángtíng Cáo-dòng-side polymath model.
