Zēng Gǒng 曾鞏 (1019–1083), Zǐgù 子固, hào Nánfēng xiānshēng 南豐先生, native of Nánfēng 南豐 in Jiànchāng 建昌 (modern Jiāngxī). One of the eight prose-masters of TángSòng (TángSòng bājiā 唐宋八家) and a leading Northern-Sòng historiographical and bibliographical figure. Jìnshì of Jiāyòu 嘉祐 2 (1057), the same cohort as Sū Shì 蘇軾, Sū Zhé 蘇轍, and Zhāng Zǎi 張載. Initially appointed sīfǎ cānjūn 司法參軍 of Tàipíng zhōu 太平州, then summoned as Jíxián jiàolǐ 集賢校理 (collator at the Jíxián Academy), where he supervised editions of the Zhànguó cè, Shuō yuàn, the Lièzǐ, and Xiào-Wǔdì-period histories — his collation prefaces (e.g. that to the Zhànguó cè) are foundational for Sòng bibliographical scholarship. Successively prefect of Fú 福, Míng 明, Qí 齊, Xiāng 襄, Hóng 洪, Cāng 滄, and Fú 福 prefectures. Under Shénzōng he reached Zhōngshū shèrén 中書舍人 (Imperial Edict-Drafter). For five months in Yuánfēng 元豐 4 (1081) he was attached to the Bureau of History (史館修撰) charged with compiling a Five-Reigns History (太祖至英宗); his draft Zǒnglùn 總論 displeased the throne and the project was cancelled. Biography: Sòngshū (Tuō Tuō et al.) KR2a0017 juǎn 319. The Lóngpíng jí 隆平集 (KR2d0004) is attributed to him but is generally agreed by Sòng and modern scholars to be pseudepigraphic.
