Chén Shīdào 陳師道 (1053–1101), zì Lǚcháng 履常 (also Wújǐ 無已), hào Hòushān jūshì 後山居士. Of Péngchéng 彭城 (modern Xúzhōu, Jiāngsū). Studied prose under Zēng Gǒng 曾鞏 曾鞏 (his JiāngHàn meeting with the master in Yuánfēng — later disputed in Zhū Xī’s Yuánfēng polemic — became canonical Jiāngxī-school lineage data); later studied poetry under Huáng Tíngjiān 黃庭堅 黃庭堅 — and in the Jiāngxī shīpài canonical “One Forefather, Three Patriarchs” (yīzǔ sānzōng) Wújǐ is one of the sānzōng (with Huáng Tíngjiān and Chén Yǔyì 陳與義) under Dù Fǔ as yīzǔ. In Yuányòu 1 / 1086 by Sū Shì 蘇軾 蘇軾’s recommendation, with Fù Yáoyú 傅堯俞 and Sūn Jué 孫覺 backing, made Xúzhōu xué jiàoshòu; later summoned to court as Mìshūshěng zhèngzì. Famously poor and stubborn — the Sòngshǐ Wényuàn zhuàn anecdote of his refusing to wear the borrowed qiú (fur robe) of his brother-in-law Zhào Tǐngzhī 趙挺之 — even on the imperial-sacrifice attendance — and dying of cold-induced illness shortly thereafter (Yuánfú 3 / 1101) is canonical. Sòngshǐ 444 (Wényuàn zhuàn 6). Two principal collections: the comprehensive Hòushān jí 後山集 KR4d0087 in 24 juǎn (the Wèi Yǎn 魏衍 zì-bian recension supplemented by additions; 765 piān shī + 171 piān wén + 4 juǎn táncóng + lǐjiū + shīhuà + chángduǎnjù) and the Hòushān shīzhù 後山詩注 KR4d0088 (only the shī) in 12 juǎn annotated by Rèn Yuān 任淵 任淵 — the canonical Jiāngxī-school annotated edition.
