Sù 素, Liánfēng 蓮峰 (“Lotus Peak”), also styled Xīmíng Sù 西明素 from his last abbacy. LínjìYángqí dharma-heir of Bǎichī Xíngyuán 百癡行元 (1611–1662, of the Tiāntóng Mìyún line). Born in 萬曆四十年 = 1612–1613 (per “辛丑秋…時年五十”, Liánfēng yǔlù j. 7); death year unknown — was still living in Kāngxī 30 = 1691 at age 80. Native of Pútián 莆田 (Fújiàn); lay surname 柯.

Formation. Drawn to mountain seclusion in childhood. At 18 took the five lay precepts under Qiáoyún 樵雲大師 and devoted himself to niànfó. At 27 entered Guóhuānsì 國懽寺 and tonsured under Yìsǒu 逸叟和尚. While reading the Xuěfēng yǔlù and the line on Tóuzǐ 投子 pointing to a stone — “all the buddhas of the three worlds are inside this” — he doubted half a year. Went to Cáoshān 曹山 and was struck by Bǎohuá Rěn 寶華忍 with the staff: a first opening. Subsequently received final jìbié (sealing) under Jīnsù Yuán 金粟元 (= Bǎichī Xíngyuán) at Jiànzhōu Bǎishān 建州百山 — “needle and mustard-seed met.”

Six successive abbacies (all in Xīnghuàfǔ 興化府, Fújiàn). Retired to Yúnfēng 雲峰 by ca. 1666.
