Chén Fùliáng 陳傅良

Style name Jūnjǔ 君舉 (taking the meaning “Fù Yuè 傅說 was raised from the rammed earth” — “raised” matching “submitted-earth-walling,” fixing the standard form 傅 of his given name; the variant 傳 sometimes appears but the SKQS tíyào on KR1e0038 standardises to 傅). Sobriquet Zhǐzhāi 止齋. Posthumous title Wénjié 文節. Native of Ruìān 瑞安 in Wēnzhōu 溫州 (modern Zhèjiāng). Lifedates 1137–1203, given by the Sòng shǐ (juan 434) and the SKQS tíyào. CBDB id 10585.

Jìnshì of Qiándào 8 (1172). Held the senior court posts of Zhōngshū shèrén 中書舍人 (Drafting Edict-Drafter) and Bǎomógé dàizhì 寶謨閣待制. Was the principal Chūnqiū scholar of the Yǒngjiā school 永嘉學派 — the Southern-Sòng “utilitarian” intellectual current opposed to Zhū Xī’s Dàoxué — and a senior contemporary of Yè Shì 葉適 (1150–1223), who succeeded him as the school’s leading figure. The Yǒngjiā school was politically aligned with the resistance party against Hán Tuōzhòu 韓侂胄’s eventual New Policies revival.

His principal Chūnqiū works:

  • Chūnqiū hòu zhuàn 春秋後傳 in 12 juan (KR1e0038) — surviving running commentary, the principal Yǒng-jiā-school Chūnqiū statement.
  • Zuǒshì zhāng zhǐ 左氏章旨 in 30 juan — a Zuǒzhuàn paraphrase work; lost as a complete text, partial fragments in Yǒnglè dàdiǎn.

Also wrote on the Shàngshū, Sānlǐ (especially the Zhōulǐ — his Zhōulǐ shuō 周禮說 in 12 juan), military strategy (Lì dài bīng zhì 歷代兵制 in 8 juan, surviving), and substantial historical works including Liǎng Hàn shǐjì 兩漢史記 and Qián Hàn lièzhuàn 前漢列傳. His collected works survive as Zhǐzhāi xiānshēng wén jí 止齋先生文集 in 51 juan.

His pupils Cài Yòuxué 蔡幼學, Hú Zōng 胡宗, and Zhōu Miǎn 周勉 were charged with reading the three commentaries respectively; one of them always accompanied Chén in office, providing immediate reference for Chūnqiū questions. Chén’s Chūnqiū method — the conjunction of Gōngyáng / Gǔliáng “not-recorded” hermeneutic with the Zuǒzhuàn’s factual record — was admired by Zhào Fǎng 趙汸 in the Yuán as the most accomplished Sòng Chūnqiū scholarship.

Buried at Ruìān; epitaph by his contemporary Lóu Yuè 樓鑰.
