Xìngtǒng 性統 (Biéān Xìngtǒng 別庵性統)

Early-Qīng LínjìYángqí Chán master. Hào Biéān 別庵 (“Different Hermitage”), also Biéāntǒng 別庵統 or Biégōng 別公. Lifedates 1661 – 1717/11/3 (Kāngxī 56 / 10 朔旦, age 57, per the Shèngyīn jiēdài sì 聖因接待寺 temple gazetteer juan 3 “Biography of the 34th-generation master Biéān Xìngtǒng”).

Dharma-heir of Sānshān Dēnglái 三山燈來 (1614–1685); abbot at Shèngyīn jiēdàisì 聖因接待寺 as the 34th-generation descendant master. Compiler-editor of two major late-seventeenth-century Chán texts:

  • Wǔ jiā zōng zhǐ zuǎn yào 五家宗旨纂要 KR6q0169 — his master Dēnglái’s systematic exposition of the distinctive teaching-methods of the Five Houses, with Xìngtǒng’s own commentary annotations.
  • Xù dēng zhèng tǒng 續燈正統 KR6q0028 (with its table of contents KR6q0027) — a major continuation lamp-record of the LínjìYángqí lineage, prefaced 1691, the principal “orthodox” lamp-record of the late Kāngxī lineage-dispute era.

Note: an earlier note identified Xìngtǒng as Cáodòng; the DILA record and his lineage through Dēnglái and Qìngzhōng Tiěbì Huìjī place him firmly in the LínjìYángqí line, correcting this earlier attribution.
