Dēnglái 燈來 (Sānshān Dēnglái 三山燈來)

Late-Míng / early-Qīng LínjìYángqí Chán master. Hào Sānshān 三山 (“Three Peaks”), Wěidù 葦渡 (“Reed-Crossing”), Pánshān dàorén 磐山道人 (“Daoist of Anchored Mountain”). Lay name Zēng Shǒudìng 曾守定, Bùbō 不波. Lifedates 1614/11/29 – 1685/8/17 (Wànlì 42 / 10/28 – Kāngxī 24 / 7/18, age 72, per the Gāofēng Sānshān Lái chánshī niánpǔ 高峰三山來禪師年譜 juan 1). Native of Zhōngzhōu 忠州 (modern Zhōngxiàn 忠縣 in Chóngqìng, Sichuan).

Dharma-heir of Qìngzhōng Tiěbì Huìjī 慶忠鐵壁慧機 of Zhōngzhōu, a prominent Sichuan LínjìYángqí master. Abbacies at Gāofēng Kāixī 高峰開禧 (Zhōngzhōu) and at Wǔyún 五雲. The full form of his title — Zhōngzhōu Gāofēng Kāixī Sānshān Dēnglái 忠州高峰開禧三山燈來 — records his most significant abbacy.

Author of the Wǔ jiā zōng zhǐ zuǎn yào 五家宗旨纂要 KR6q0169, completed by 1657 and later edited and expanded by his dharma-heir Biéān Xìngtǒng 別庵性統. The work is a comprehensive systematic exposition of the distinctive teaching-methods of the Five Houses of classical Chán. Also author of the Gāofēng Sānshān Lái chánshī yǔlù 高峰三山來禪師語錄, his collected Chán sermons.
