Shānghán fǎ zǔ 傷寒法祖

Patriarchs of the Method on Cold Damage by 柯琴 (Kē Qín, Yùnbó 韻伯, fl. late 17th c., 清) — original manuscript; 任越庵 (Rén Yuèān, fl. mid-Qiánlóng, 清) — transcriber and publisher

About the work

A two-juan posthumous compilation of 柯琴 Kē Qín’s Shānghán essays and clinical notes, transcribed and published by 任越庵 Rén Yuèān in the mid-Qiánlóng period from manuscripts preserved in Kē’s family. The work is a supplementary companion to the principal Lái sū jí set, presenting essays Kē did not include in the published (KR3ef007) or Fù yì (KR3ef033).

Abstract

The composition window 1735–1780 brackets Kē Qín’s death (in the early 1730s) and the work’s printing by Rén Yuèān. The text is preserved primarily through the Rén edition and its later reprints in the Lái sū jí collected sets. As a posthumous compilation, the Fǎ zǔ presents Kē’s mature Shānghán thinking in slightly less polished form than the polished essays of the principal ; this gives it documentary interest for tracing Kē Qín’s evolving doctrinal stance on key clinical-doctrinal questions.
