About the work
An eight-juan philological-clinical edition of the Jīnguì yào lüè, forming a major section of the Yī zōng jīn jiàn 醫宗金鑑 (KR3e0090) — the comprehensive Qiánlóng imperial medical compendium completed Qiánlóng 7 (1742) and printed Qiánlóng 14 (1749). The work is the Jīnguì companion to the Yī zōng jīn jiàn’s Dìng zhèng Shānghán lùn zhù — together constituting the imperial-commissioned “Dìng zhèng Zhòngjǐng quán shū” 訂正仲景全書 (Corrected Edition of the Complete Works of Zhòngjǐng).
Abstract
Composition date 1742 (Qiánlóng 7). The editors’ opening note — preserved in the Kanripo source — provides one of the principal eighteenth-century surveys of the Jīnguì commentary tradition: “《傷寒論》得成無己創註，續者五十餘家，故得昌明宇內：《金匱要略》人罕言之，雖有趙良、徐彬等註釋，但其文義古奧，係千載殘編錯簡，頗多疑義，闕文亦復不少” — i.e., where the Shānghán lùn has the foundational 成無己 Chéng Wúyǐ commentary plus over fifty subsequent commentators, the Jīnguì has been comparatively neglected: only 趙以德 Zhào Liáng (= Zhào Yǐdé) and 徐彬 Xú Bīn have produced sustained commentaries, and the canonical text — a fragmentary thousand-year-old work — abounds in doubtful and missing passages.
The imperial editors’ program is “於其失次者序之，殘缺者補之，博採群書，詳加註釋” — i.e., reorder displaced passages, supply missing material, collect commentary from the entire tradition, and produce a definitive annotated edition. The result is one of the principal eighteenth-century Jīnguì editions and the basis of subsequent Qīng Jīnguì education at the Tàiyīyuàn.
The work was the imperial-curriculum Jīnguì textbook from 1749 onward and one of the principal sources for the post-1749 Qīng Jīnguì commentary tradition. Tamba no Motokata in KR3ef085 cites it as one of the principal vehicles for transmitting 李彣 Lǐ Wén, 高世栻 Gāo Shìshì, and 李瑋西 Lǐ Wěixī (whose original works were largely lost in Qīng circulation).

The Yī zōng jīn jiàn is the single most-cited Qīng medical reference work and the principal monument of mid-Qiánlóng imperial-medical scholarship. The Jīnguì section is one of the two principal Zhòngjǐng materials in the compendium (the other being the Dìng zhèng Shānghán lùn zhù), constituting together the imperial-commissioned “Corrected Edition of the Complete Works of Zhòngjǐng”.
