Records on Restoring the Source: Notes on the Commentary on the Karman-text Adapted to Circumstances by 允堪 (Yǔn Kān, 述)
About the work
An eight-fascicle Northern Sòng jì 記 sub-commentary on Dàoxuān’s (道宣) Sìfēnlǜ shānbǔ suíjī jiémó shū 四分律刪補隨機羯磨疏 (KR6k0019) by Yǔn Kān 允堪 (允堪, 1005–1061). Zhèngyuán 正源 (“rectifying the source”) signals Yǔn Kān’s editorial intent: to restore Dàoxuān’s original karman-text commentary against the corruptions and lacunae of the eleventh-century Sòng witnesses.
Prefaces
The Manji edition prints a structural index (mùcì 目次) at the head of juan 1 that reproduces Dàoxuān’s own xù and Suíjī jiémó xù before launching into the eight-fascicle jì. No separate Yǔn Kān preface survives.
Abstract
The Zhèngyuán jì is one of the principal Northern Sòng sub-commentaries on Dàoxuān’s karman-text manual (KR6k0019) and forms — together with Yǔn Kān’s jì on the Sìfēnlǜ hánzhù jièběn shū (KR6k0144) — the core of his contribution to the Sòng Vinaya revival. The work proceeds piān-by-piān through Dàoxuān’s eight chapters (jífǎ 集法, jiéjiè 結界, shòufǎ 受法, yīyào shòujìng 衣藥受淨 etc.), reconstructing the text-history and supplying lemmatic glosses on each of Dàoxuān’s kē divisions. Yǔn Kān’s reconstructive philological work was decisive for the later Sòng Lǜzōng: his sub-commentary supplied the practical resource that allowed Yuánzhào (元照) and the Língzhīsì 靈芝寺 successors to revive the Nánshān tradition in the second half of the eleventh century. Composition cannot be precisely dated within Yǔn Kān’s career; the bracket here gives his mature scholarly years (he reached majority around the late-1030s).
