Sēngbǎo zhèngxù zhuàn 僧寶正續傳
Orthodox Continuation of the Biographies of the Treasure of the Saṅgha
by 祖琇 Zǔxiù (撰), Southern Sòng (composed ca. 1131–1162)
About the work
A seven-juan supplement to 慧洪 Huìhóng’s Chánlín sēngbǎo zhuàn (KR6q0040), by the Southern Sòng monk Zǔxiù. Adds biographies of further Chán masters from the Northern Sòng to the early Southern Sòng, in continuation of Huìhóng’s biographical method.
Abstract
Zǔxiù — the same Zǔxiù who compiled the Lóngxīng biānnián tōnglùn 隆興編年通論 of 1164 — extends Huìhóng’s biographical compendium with later figures, particularly from the Yángqí 楊岐 line whose ascendancy in the early Southern Sòng was already evident. The work preserves Huìhóng’s literary-narrative format and is treated as the canonical second member of the three-part Sēngbǎo zhuàn sub-tradition (KR6q0040 + KR6q0041 + KR6q0042).
Translations and research
No English translation. Treated as part of the Sēngbǎo zhuàn tradition in studies of Sòng Chán biographical literature; no dedicated monograph.
Other points of interest
The continuity of literary-biographical method from Huìhóng through Zǔxiù gives the Sēngbǎo zhuàn tradition an unusually consistent stylistic profile across its three constituent works.
