Dàomín 道忞 (Mùchén Dàomín 木陳道忞)
Pivotal early-Qīng Línjì-lineage Chán master and spiritual advisor to the Shùnzhì emperor. Hào Shānwēng 山翁 (“Mountain Old-Man”), Mùchén 木陳 (“Wood-Chén”), Mèngyǐn dàorén 夢隱道人 (“Dream-Hidden Daoist”); shì Hóngjué 弘覺 / 宏覺 (“Vast Awakening”). Posthumous imperial title Hóngjué chánshī 弘覺禪師. Lay surname Lín 林. Native of Cháoyáng 潮陽 (Guǎngdōng). Lifedates 1596–1674.
Dharma-heir of Mìyún Yuánwù 密雲圓悟 (1566–1642); successor to Yuánwù as abbot of Tiāntóngsì 天童寺 in Míngzhōu 明州 (Nìngbō, Zhèjiāng). One of the two or three most important Yuán-wù-lineage Chán masters of his generation.
Imperial connection. Invited by the Shùnzhì 順治 emperor in Shùnzhì 16 (1659) to travel to Beijing and teach at the Wànshàndiàn 萬善殿 within the Forbidden City; his sermons and conversations with Shùnzhì are preserved in the Tiāntóng Hóngjué Mín chánshī běi yóu jí 天童弘覺忞禪師北遊集 KR6q0199. The imperial relationship made Dàomín one of the most politically-prominent Buddhist monks of the early Qīng, alongside the imperially-recognised Línjì master Yùlín Tōngxiù 玉林通琇.
Dharma-heirs included Zhēnpǔ 真樸 and a substantial lineage of early-to-mid-Qīng Línjì masters. Collected sermons preserved as the Mùchén héshàng yǔlù 木陳和尚語錄 (J26 B182). Also compiled the 《禪燈世譜》 Chándēng shìpǔ (KR6r0110, X1601, 9 juan), a tabular LínjìCáodòng lineage-genealogy with sub-lines, prefaced 1632 by his lay-disciple Huáng Duānbó 黃端伯.
