About the work

An eight-juan early-Kāngxī commentary on the Jīnguì yào lüè by 李彣 Lǐ Wén (字 振聲 Zhènshēng, hào 西垣 Xīyuán), a student of 潘鄧林 Pān Dēnglín. The work — dated Kāngxī 21 = 1682 in the editorial preface preserved in modern reprints — is one of the earliest sustained Qīng Jīnguì commentaries, slightly later than 徐彬 Xú Bīn’s Jīnguì yào lüè lùn zhù and 程林 Chéng Lín’s Jīnguì yào lüè zhí jiě. The “guǎng zhù” 廣註 (extensive annotation) title refers to Lǐ’s distinctively broad citation practice.

Abstract

Composition date 1682 (Kāngxī 21). The modern editorial preface preserved in the Kanripo source — written by Dù Xiǎolíng 杜曉玲 for the modern critical edition — outlines Lǐ’s distinctive citational range. The annotation covers not only the standard Sòng–Yuán–Míng medical authorities (徐之才 Xú Zhīcái, 朱肱 Zhū Hóng, 許叔微 Xǔ Shūwēi, 張從正 Zhāng Zǐhé, 朱震亨 Zhū Dānxī, 王履 Wáng Lǚ, 張兼善 Zhāng Jiānshàn, 趙養葵 Zhào Yǎngkuí, 樓全善 Lóu Quánshàn, 王三陽 Wáng Sānyáng, 喻昌 Yú Jiāyán, with the gynaecological 郭稽中 Guō Jīzhōng and 武之望 Wǔ Zhīwàng, and pharmacological 陳藏器 Chén Cángqì and 李時珍 Lǐ Shízhēn) but also non-medical sources: the Yì jīng 周易, Shàng shū 尚書, and the military classic Hǔ qián jīng 虎鈐經. This citational breadth is characteristic of late-seventeenth-century Confucian-medical synthesis and a distinguishing feature of Lǐ’s guǎng zhù.

The work survives only in the Kāngxī 21 (1682) blockprint and in several manuscript copies, making it relatively rare even in the Qīng. Tamba no Motokata’s bibliographical survey in KR3ef085 records Lǐ as a major Jīnguì commentator known to him through citations in the Yī zōng jīn jiàn 醫宗金鑑 but personally unconsulted (“惜未得見之”). The modern Chinese critical edition (Rénmín wèishēng, with collation by Dù Xiǎolíng combining the 1682 blockprint and the surviving manuscripts) makes the text broadly available for the first time.

Other points of interest

Lǐ’s citation of the Hǔ qián jīng 虎鈐經 — a Sòng-period military-strategy classic — in a Jīnguì commentary is one of the more striking instances of late-seventeenth-century cross-genre intellectual practice: Lǐ uses the Hǔ qián jīng’s logic of opportunity-and-timing as an analogue for the clinical logic of timing-and-prescription in Jīnguì therapeutics. The work is also notable for its careful attribution of Lǐ’s teacher 潘鄧林 Pān Dēnglín — preserving one of the few documented teacher-disciple lines in Kāngxī-era Jīnguì clinical study.
