Abstract

T236a is the second oldest Chinese translation of the Diamond Sūtra, after Kumārajīva’s T235. The translation falls within Bodhiruci’s documented Luòyáng period (508–527). T236a is somewhat more literal than T235 and was used as the textual basis for Bodhiruci’s translation of [[KR6c0032|Vasubandhu’s Vajracchedikā-śāstra (T1511)]] — the principal Yogācāra commentary on the Diamond Sūtra.

The Taishō encodes T236 as two separate sub-recensions (236a and 236b) reflecting two slightly different transmitted versions in the canonical traditions; both are Bodhiruci’s translation in marginally different textual states.
