Vasubandhu’s Vajracchedikā-prajñāpāramitā-sūtra-śāstra by 天親菩薩 (Vasubandhu, 造); translated by 菩提流支 (Bodhiruci, 譯)

About the work

A three-fascicle Northern-Wèi Chinese translation of Vasubandhu’s Vajracchedikā-prajñāpāramitā-sūtra-śāstra — the principal Yogācāra commentary on the Vajracchedikā (alongside Asaṅga’s T1510). Translated by Bodhiruci 菩提流支. Signature: 「天親菩薩造/元魏天竺三藏菩提流支譯」. The Taishō head-note cross-references T1513 (the alternative Vasubandhu commentary translated by 義淨 Yìjìng) and notes the related works at T1512 and T1514.

Prefaces

No preface or postface; only the canonical translator-signature. The opening praṇāma-verse: 「法門句義及次第,世間不解離明慧,大智通達教我等…」 (“The dharma-gate’s word-meanings and order, the world fails to grasp without bright wisdom; great intelligence comprehends, instructs us all…”).

Abstract

T1511 is the principal Yogācāra commentary on the Vajracchedikā by Vasubandhu, paralleling Asaṅga’s commentary T1510. The two-brother commentarial pairing — Asaṅga and Vasubandhu both writing on the Vajracchedikā — is one of the foundational documents of the Yogācāra reading of the Prajñāpāramitā. T1511 is dateable to Bodhiruci’s documented Luòyáng activity (509–527).
