About the work

Three-juan yǔlù of Jùyún Chuīwàn Guǎngzhēn 廣真 聚雲吹萬廣真 (1582–1639), late-Míng Sichuan LínjìYángqí master and founder of the Jùyúnpài 聚雲派 sub-lineage at Zhōngzhōu Jùyún Chányuàn 忠州聚雲禪院. Compiled by the dharma-grandson Sānshān Dēnglái 燈來 三山燈來 (1614–1685, heir-of-heir via 慧機 鐵壁慧機), published in the Jiāxīng Canon as J29 B238. Front-preface by Xióng Rǔxué 熊汝學 (dēngzhào 燈炤), self-styled Lúshān Qiānzhàngyán tóutuó 廬山千丈巖頭陀, shuǐbù shàngshūláng qián quèjīng shǐzhě 水部尚書郎前榷荊使者, dated 崇禎壬午菊月 = 1642 intercalary 9th month. Contents: shàng-juan — shàngtáng + cháhuà; zhōng-juan — pǔshuō + xiǎocān + shìzhòng + fǎyǔ; xià-juan — rùtáng + rùshì + kānbiàn + wèndá + sònggǔ + záshù + tǎmíng. The closing colophon notes lìng kè zhènglù shí juan, guǎnglù sānshí zhǒng, gòng liùshí liù juan, bǎn cún Zhōngzhōu Zhìpíng Chányuàn 另刻正錄十卷廣錄三十種共六十六卷板存忠州治平禪院 — the zhènglù referred to there is KR6q0449 (20 juan, J29 B239, Chuīwàn chánshī yǔlù), and the 30-title guǎnglù was Guǎngzhēn’s separately cut 50-juan collection (now only partially surviving, with individual treatises at KR6q0235 《一貫別傳》 and the Shìjiào sānzìjīng 釋教三字經).

Abstract

Dating. Juan 1 opens with a 萬曆戊午上元日 = 1618 1/15 entry-sermon at Héngzhōufǔ Xiāoxiāng Húdōng Chányuàn 衡州府瀟湘湖東禪院 (Húnán). Subsequent shàngtáng juan follow Guǎngzhēn’s Jiāngnán / Fújiàn / Guǎngdōng / Húxiāng circuit and eventual return to Sìchuān for the five-seat abbacy in Zhōngzhōu. Closing juan includes his death-verse cháo dǎ sānqiān, mù dǎ bābǎi; yào jiàn Jùyún, méimáo chū xiě 朝打三千暮打八百要見聚雲眉毛出血 and the Chóngzhēn 12/7/30 (= 1639 8/28) death-scene. notBefore = 1618 (first abbacy); notAfter = 1642 (Xióng Rǔxué preface).

Authorship and transmission. Xióng Rǔxué’s preface notes that the compilation was incomplete several years after Guǎngzhēn’s death — yuánjì shù nián ér yǔlù yóu wèi quán kè 圓寂數年而語錄猶未全刻 — and that Xióng and his tóngméng partners personally organized the engraving. The preface distinguishes three layers: (i) this three-juan selective yǔlù (KR6q0448); (ii) a separately cut ten-juan zhènglù (the twenty-juan KR6q0449 in its final expanded form); (iii) thirty separate guǎnglù titles totalling some fifty juan, chiefly doctrinal and literary rather than yǔlù proper.

Doctrinal character. Guǎngzhēn’s Jùyún tradition was distinctively oriented toward 三教一貫 sānjiào yīguàn (the unity of the three teachings) — see KR6q0235 for his principal systematic work — and his yǔlù deploys extensive Confucian-classical citation alongside Chán gōngàn treatment. Xióng’s preface emphasizes this character: jiē fāmíng sāndài zhī ào yǐ pángjué zhūzǐ bǎijiā, jí wú rú hàoshǒu qióngjīng shàng bù néng chuǎng qí lángwǔ 皆發明三代之奧以旁抉諸子百家即吾儒皓首窮經尚不能闖其廊廡.

Lineage. Guǎngzhēn received his yìnkě from Cháoyáng Yuèmíng Liánchí chánshī 朝陽月明聯池禪師, a Sichuan-based Línjì master. Principal dharma-heirs are Zhìpíng Tiěbì Huìjī 慧機 治平鐵壁慧機 (compiler-circle of KR6q0450, KR6q0451), Wànsōng Sānmù Huìzhī 萬松三目慧芝, and Bǎofēng Sānbāzhǎng Tiěméi Huìlì 寶峰三巴掌鐵眉慧麗 (cf. KR6q0452).

Not applicable — Jiā-xīng-canon imprint (J29 B238). The Xióng Rǔxué preface and the closing 塔銘 provide the principal documentation.

Other points of interest

• Paired with KR6q0449 as a single Guǎngzhēn corpus. B238 (3 juan) is a selective yǔlù compilation; B239 (20 juan) is the full zhènglù. Both share the compiler Dēnglái 燈來; the latter is explicitly marked chóngbiān 重編 in the catalog, indicating it is the definitive expansion of the selective volume.
• Three-teachings-unity Chán. The Jùyúnpài is distinctive within the MíngQīng Línjì field for its programmatic sānjiào yīguàn orientation and for producing catechism-style didactic texts (KR6q0235, 釋教三字經) aimed at lay-scholar audiences — quite different in character from the contemporary Mìyún / Hànyuè disputation-literature of Jiāngnán.
