Hóngjué Mín chánshī yǔlù 弘覺忞禪師語錄

Recorded Sayings of the “Vastly-Awakened” Chán Master Mín by 顯權 (等編)

The major twenty-juan yǔ-lù of Mù-chén Dào-mǐn 道忞 木陳道忞 (1596 – 1674), imperially-titled Hóng-jué chán-shī 弘覺禪師 by the Shùnzhì emperor. Línjì-Yángqí dharma-heir of Mì-yún Yuán-wù 圓悟 (1566–1642, cf. KR6q0604) — Mì-yún’s most prominent fǎ-sì and the architect of Tiān-tóng Línjì’s high-imperial-court engagement. Compiled by fǎ-sì Dá-biàn Xiǎn-quán 顯權 děng biān. Catalog source-edition is the Qiánlóng Edition of the canon Vol. 155 No. 1643 — preserved separately at Zhōng-huá Tripiṭaka No. 1746 as 天童弘覺忞禪師語錄.

Together with KR6q0604 (Mìyún Yuánwù), KR6q0605 (Yùlín Tōngxiù), and KR6q0606 (Máoxī Xíngsēn), this yǔlù completes the four foundational yǔlù of the Manchu-imperial LínjìYángqí establishment at the ShùnzhìKāngxī court. Dàomǐn was the principal Línjì preceptor and counterpart to Yùlín Tōngxiù at the Shùnzhì court; the two represented the Tiāntóng / Mìyún line and the Qìngshān / Tiānyǐn line respectively. Dàomǐn is also the shàngjìn (presenter) of his master Mìyún’s yǔlù (cf. KR6q0604’s opening zòuzhāng).

notBefore1640 (post-Mì-yún-late-period mature abbacy); notAfter = 1674 (death). Catalog dynasty 清.

Contents. Twenty juan documenting Dàomǐn’s teaching career, including his Tiāntóng abbacy and the 1659–1660 imperial-audience record at the Shùnzhì court (the Bèiyóu jí 北遊集, separately circulating as a related travel-and-court document).

Other points of interest

Dàomǐn’s writings — together with Yùlín Tōngxiù’s KR6q0605 and Máoxī Xíngsēn’s KR6q0606 — constitute the principal Manchu-imperial LínjìYángqí archive of the early Qīng. The Bèiyóu jí 北遊集 (his travelogue of the 1659 northern journey to the imperial court) is a major historical source for Shùnzhì’s late-life Buddhist engagement and the imperial-monastic interactions of the Manchu high court. Mùchén’s stature as Mìyún’s senior fǎsì — over Fèiyǐn Tōngróng, Pòshān Hǎimíng, Hànyuè Fǎzàng, and others — is reflected in the magnitude of the 20-juan yǔlù corpus.
